Let's talk about what no one talks about. The issues that affect hundreds of people in our church and millions beyond our walls. Let's shed the light of God's grace on the embarrassing, shameful, secret things most people want to keep behind closed doors. Let's ask the Holy Spirit to heal us in the process.
August 13 - Drunknness (part 1)
Appleton was recently named the drunkest city in America...and many Appleton residents smiled proudly. Like fish who don't realize what water is, we in Wisconsin don't realize how abnormal our drinking habits are. Or how destructive. This message will introduce our people to our problem, share God's wisdom about honoring God with what we drink, and provide a better buzz in the pleasure of knowing Christ as Lord.
August 20 - Drunknness (part 2)
Spirit vs spirits. Paul talks about the two ways to find excitement, joy, etc. - to be filled with the Spirit or to get drunk on beer, wine, and spirits. As Paul explains in Ephesians 6, these two paths affect marriage, children, work, and spiritual warfare.
August 27 - Depression
Aren't Christians supposed to be happy? To rejoice in the days that the Lord has made? So, why do so many of us feel so unhappy? Depression is a complicated struggle that has both chemical and spiritual components. It often leads to greater depression as the depressed realize how many "rejoicing commandments" they aren't keeping. This message looks to the Psalms/Lamentations to resonate with 'down and out' Christians and to remind them of the God who walks with them in the darkest valley.
September 3 - Suicide
The Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" thrust suicide into the cultural conversation. This sermon explains why Christians are tempted by suicide, what the Bible says about suicide, and gives 13+ reasons why we should live to the end of our God-ordained time of grace.
